2011 Audiovisual Programme for Young People
After celebrating the 25th anniversary, we present the new edition of our encounter. With renewed energies, we have planned in great detail this event, the oldest of its type inEurope, in which school productions take part. Nearly 200 works have been submitted, providing a rich mosaic of the dreams and interests of young people today. When taken as a whole, these works give us what Godard would call: ‘a sense of the texture or flow of history’.
Music, composition, design, performance, narrative, literature… It is perhaps because cinema brings together so many different art forms that it has become the world’s most popular form of entertainment. Things that the human eye fails to notice or which elude representation by the pen or the brush can be captured by the camera in the universal language of images.
The current fascination of young people for the audiovisual media has forged a strong relationship between their school and their general environment. In a close view we appreciate that every story contained within these short films presents a unique view of the world. We must remember that viewing cinema is more than just gazing at a screen, just as reading is more than spelling out letters: the eye must be trained and educated, and this is what makes cinema so valuable as an educational, artistic and cultural medium. These short films have strengthened our conviction that cinema is an excellent tool for motivating young people and for complementing many areas of the school curriculum.
Another educational asset of cinema is that it teaches the value of team work, which is an essential factor in cinematographic production. Films are the end result of collaboration, of a joint effort to produce moving images that tell a story, allowing all those who appear in the final credits to feel proud of their contribution. Students, teachers and audience are all part and parcel of this combined effort, and each one can consider themselves an active participant. As in every Edition of the Cinema Jove International Film Festival, the Audiovisual Programme for Young People offers young people and future filmmakers the opportunity to exhibit their creative works in an environment of debate and reflection.
Once again this year, young artists will become the protagonists of the more than 40 short films to be projected. These films tell stories in the language of images, words and sound and each of them, from their own unique point of view, will shed light upon the dreams, interests and concerns of the citizens of the modern world. Naturally not all of the films submitted will be included in the program. Every year you make it more difficult for us to select the lucky few! In presenting these films we wish to recognise and pay tribute to the works of all those who have taken part.
Apart from viewing the short films in three categories, we will also hear about the outlook for audiovisual media in the region of Cantabria, and Josep Alcover will speak about music in cinema. We will also be able to enjoy the unique experience of watching the film The Cabinet of D. Caligari (Robert Wiene, 1920) accompanied by a live performance of the composer and pianist Arsenio Martins. By combining this work of German expressionism with the music of the famous pianist, we will be able to imagine we are attending a screening during the inaugural era of cinema history, when the silent voices of the actors were substituted by live instrumental music.
As a relaxing aperitif, the film Bienvenido, Mister Marshall (Luis García Berlanga, 1953) will be shown on the last day. Once again this will be followed by an entertaining production of the theatre company ‘Viviendo del cuento’. This performance, along with the awards ceremony, will bring the 26th edition of the Audiovisual Programme for Young People to a close. But before we shout ‘lights, camera, action!’ the organisation wishes to thank you for getting involved, and to congratulate the teachers, students and families for the work they have done. Welcome toValencia!
